NATIONAL NUT DAY 22 October

National Nut Day was started by Liberation Foods, the UK's only Fair Trade farmer owned nut company, as a way to raise awareness of fairtrade nuts and promote healthy living.

What are nuts?

Nuts are fruits with a hard inedible outer shell and an edible seed inside. True nuts have shells that do not open to release the seed.

Sometimes dried seeds are referred to as nuts but these are not true nuts.

Health Benefits Of Nuts;

Nuts help to reduce hypertension and the risks associated with heart disease.

They help lower the risks of some cancers.

They fill you up so you eat less and can aid in fight against obesity.

Nuts provide energy.

Fun Facts About Nuts;

Almonds, chestnuts and hazelnuts have the lowest fat content.

Brazil nuts, Macadamia Nuts and Cashew Nuts have the highest fat content.

There are thousands of different types of nuts but amongst the most popular are;

Peanuts (also known as ground nuts), Almonds, Brazil Nuts, Peacan Nuts, Macadamia Nuts, Walnuts, Chestnuts, Hazelnuts and Pistachio Nuts.

Nut Allergies;

It is mostly peanuts that cause allergic reactions in humans but other nuts can also do this.

A nut allergy can cause anaphylaxis shock which can be fatal.

Approximately 1 in 100 people have a peanut allergy.

Approximately 1 in 200 people have an allergy to any nuts.

Approximately 1 out of 5 children will grow out of their nut allergy.
